What is Hoodia Gordonii Extract?
Hoodia Gordoni is put forth in two forms for buyers. One form is Pure Hoodia, which is the Hoodia plant ground into powder and then made into capsules. The other form is Hoodia extract.
Hoodia extracts are made through an extraction process. In the extraction process, the P57 molecule (which is responsible for inducing weight loss) is extracted from the Hoodia plant and is then used when making Hoodia diet pills or liquids.
Phytopharm – the company which has patent rights to isolate, purify, or alter the anti-obesity P57 molecule, uses an extraction process in order to take it out of the plant and put in into the Hoodia diet pill. Their extraction process is one that has been thoroughly researched. Other companies, who market Hoodia, also use extraction processes, but ones which are very different from what is used by Phytopharm.
Companies other than Phytopharm, who sell Hoodia, put forth what is called a 20:1 Hoodia extract. What this implies is that the Hoodia extract pills are twenty times more powerful than the pure Hoodia pills. Though this makes it a good choice to go in for such extract pills, there are still issues of doubt in the extraction process used by such companies.
Questions that arise about the extraction process used include… Does the P57 active ingredient in the Hoodia plant remain the same after the extraction process? Since Hoodia from South Africa is very expensive, how is it possible for Hoodia extract companies to use twenty times of expensive Hoodia Gordonii and sell it for such a low price after the extraction process? Are these companies in violation of Phytopharm’s patent, through the extraction process they use to make extracts?
The answers to such question will only come with time and more research on production of Hoodia Gordonii extracts. As for now, it is important for a consumer to be aware of these points when purchasing Hoodia extracts.
