After the CSIR isolated the active ingredient, they licensed the patent rights for P-57 to Phytopharm, a British based pharmaceutical company. A lot of people think of Phizer hoodia (more commonly spelled Pfizer) because they think the well known pharmaceutical giant here in the United States had the patent rights to the active ingredient

The P-57 molecule is the active ingredient in Hoodia Gordonii which enables weight loss. It was first isolated by CSIR and then the patent rights for the P-57 molecule were given to Phytopharm, a British based pharmaceutical company.

Pfizer was interested in doing research on this molecule and so they worked with Phytopharm to discover if they could make an anti-obesity prescription drug from the molecule. After some research they concluded that it was too costly for them to mass produce a drug made from P-57.

Phytopharm then found another company Unilever (the giant company that owns SlimFast products) in order to release non-prescription products with Hoodia Gordonii. They have decided to conduct some studies on the efficacy and safety of the P-57 molecule, but their products won’t be released until 2008.
