Hoodia Gordonni is a natural appetite suppressant plant which grows in the Kalahari Desert. Before, it was discovered by the western world, research was conducted on it by CSIR. CSIR stands for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

CSIR started its research on Hoodia Gordonii, in the mid 1990’s, to study the diet followed by the Sans Bushmen. The San Bushmen have been living in the Kalahari Desert for over 1000 years and are part of a nomadic hunter-gatherer group of people. As part of this study, they also wanted to test the safety of plant extracts.

What they found was that the San Bushmen ate Hoodia Gordonii’s succulent’s core in order to suppress their appetite. This was essential for them to survive in the harsh desert region where food and water was scarce. The CSIR conducted tests which involved giving Hoodia Gordonii to animals. They found the animals ate less and also did not suffer from any problems. This led them to conclude that Hoodia Gordonii had the ability to suppress the appetite and that it also did not contain any toxins.

Further research on Hoodia Gordonii enabled them to isolate the active ingredient that caused appetite to be suppressed. This active ingredient has since been licensed to a British pharmaceutical company – Phytopharm. Phytopharm which currently owns the patent to the active molecule, in conjunction with Unilever. Phytopharm named the active ingredient as P57, because it was the 57th
product that CSIR had spent funds on for the purpose of research.
