How did the 60 Minutes Show make Hoodia Gordonii popular?
Hoodia Gordonii has been used for centuries by the San Bushmen, to suppress their appetite. Reason being, in the Kalahari Desert, food and water were scare to come by and so eating this supplement helped the tribesmen to ward off feelings of hunger and thirst. Though this succulent has been used for centuries in this manner, it was only when information about the appetite suppressing properties was aired in the 60 Minute show, that Hoodia Gordonii came to be known to the rest of the world.
“60 Minute’s” correspondent Lesley Stahl traveled to South Africa to bring out the ground-breaking news about this succulent. There she met up with a local guide who showed her, how Hoodia Gordonii grew scattered across the Kalahari Desert. The most dramatic effect of this show was when Lesley Stahl herself ate the fleshy core of the plant and said that she did not feel hungry or thirsty the whole day. Furthermore she reported that she felt no side effects after eating it.
This news came at the time when there was a ban on stimulants such as Ephedra and Phenfen, because they caused side effects. A miracle succulent growing in the Desert, which was able to suppress the appetite and cause weight loss, be able reduce a persons calorie intake by 1,000 calories a day yet at the same time cause no side effect was like a dream come true for thousands of people who have been trying hard o battle against obesity.
