Hoodia Gordonii An appetite suppressant
Hoodia Gordonii is a natural appetite suppressant. It is a succulent which grows in the Kalahari Desert and has been used by the San tribe who live in this region as an appetite suppressant. In the year 1937, a Dutch anthropologist was studying the habits of these nomadic hunters. He noted that they often ate the Hoodia Gordonii when food and water were scarce. He mentioned that the plant as such was not very tasty, but since it had the ability to reduce appetite and thirst, it could be produced into an effective drug that aids weight loss.
It was only in 1963, that Scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research conducted an organized study of Hoodia Gordonii. They found that when Hoodia Gordonii was given to laboratory animals, the animals ate less but felt no side effects. The appetite suppressing properties of Hoodia Gordonii came form an active ingredient present in the succulent.
In the 1990’s, scientists studying Hoodia Gordonii in South Africa, attracted the attention of the British pharmaceutical company, Phytopharm. Through a joint effort, they were able to isolate and identify the active ingredient which caused appetite suppression and named this molecule in Hoodia Gordonii as “P57″. P57 works by sending signals to the brain to trick the brain into thinking that the appetite is full, which is very similar to the effect of glucose on the brain after food intake. The only difference here, is that P57 works about 10,0000 times faster than glucose.
When Hoodia Gordonii is taken for over a period of time, the appetite is suppressed and a person’s daily calorie intake is reduced because there is no feelings of huger. This causes fat stored in the body to get used up resulting in weight loss. There are no known side effects in taking Hoodia and so it can be used to achieve weight loss naturally without undergoing the trauma of side effect caused by chemical based diet pills or diet supplements.
